Independent Learning
"A teacher is one who makes himself progressively unnecessary." Thomas Carruthers
Most educators agree that independent learners are much more likely to succeed in their studies than those students who are heavily reliant on their teachers. Consequently, School House Canada believes that it is important to help student acquire the skills to become independent learnes so that they can have the opportunity to achieve maximum success. All of our lessons, worksheets and activities contain elements that foster independence.
The "growth" meetings are opportunities to: help cement the independent learning skill; help the students direct their individual program plan, and help the students to take responsibility for their learning. As the child learns these skills and moves along the independent learning continuum, there is less learning anxiety and less stress at home for both the child and the parents. The child will gradually direct more and more of his own learning and will need less and less supervison, direction and teacher intervention. Utimately he or she will take responsibility for his own educations and this will make the student a true life-long learner.
