School House Canada is designed to provide students with a complete and comprehensive program of studies for the K-9 mathematics and language arts as required by the Department of Education and the local school board.
Our Program
In order to participate in our program, parents are required to take an active part in their child's education. They must help monitor activities, passively oversee the completion of lessons and participate in the development of their child's program plan.
In addition to mastering the core program, students are required to learn and use the independent learning skills presented throughout our progam. The ultimate purpose of the School House program is to develop independent learners who are responsible for their own learning.
Evaluation and Assessment
Students are evaluated in a formative manner on a regular basis. These evaluations are an opportunity to get instructional bearings and answer important questions for the student, "Where am I." (present knowledge base), "Where do I need to go?" ( desired outcomes required by the department of education) and "How do I get there? (learning objectives). From those simple questions, the teacher, the student and the parents work together to develop an action plan.

The Action Plan
The formation of the action plan is the most important part of any evaluation process.The data collected through the assessment tell the student, the teacher and the parents a very pointed story. The student sees exactly what is performance is strong and the areas where his performance needs to improve. The teacher identifies the areas of growth and the future direction for lesson development. The parents see success in the objectives mastered and an immediate course of action to remediate areas needing attention.
Unfortunately, the development of an action plan doesn't happen in too many classrooms beacuse of the number of students and the time constraints imposed on the teacher. Students have little opportunity to celebrate the things that they did well or little time, if any, to correct and review that the things that were below par. The items that were identified as substandard remain substandard and the students move on. Over a period of time, huge gaps appear in the students' grasp of the subject content and major skill weaknesses become evident, causing additional problems.
This will never happen when your child enrolls in our program. School House Canada ensures that your child is properly grounded in every aspect of the content area. We are not happy with the results until you are.

Reporting
Keeping parents informed about their child's progress and achievement is very important. School House Canada believes that parents should be aware of the subject area content that their child is expected to cover in an academic year. They should also be aware of the instructional grade level that their child is working at and, most importantly, they should be aware of and involved in the action plan that has been developed to address their child's instructional needs. However, the parents aren't the only ones that should know this information. It is imperative that students are also an integral part of the reporting and planning process. Consequently, School House Canada provides weekly "growth" meetings with the students and regular reporting and development meeting with the parents and students.
Independent Learning
Most educators agree that independent learners are much more likely to succeed in their studies than those students who are heavily reliant on their teachers. Consequently, School House Canada believes that it is important to help student acquire the skills to become independent learnes so that they can have the opportunity to achieve maximum success. All of our lessons, worksheets and activities contain elements that foster independence.
The "growth" meetings are opportunities to help cement the independent learning skill to help the students direct their individual program plan and to take responsibility for their learning. As the child learns these skills and moves along the independent learning continuum, there is less learning anxiety and less stress at home for both the child and the parents. The child will gradually direct more and more of his own learning and will need less and less supervison, direction and teacher intervention. Utimately he or she will take responsibility for his own educations and this will make the student a true life-long learner.

Is the School House Canada Program for You and Your Child?
- students presently working at grade level maintain their skill level;
- students who are working below grade level "catch up"
- students who need enrichment and are capable of working above grade level;
- students who have missed school due to accidents or illness;
- students who are on extended holidays;
- students who are involved in home-schooling.
When your child joins our program, an assessment is done in order to determine his or her placement on the learning continuum. This placement will dictate a recommended course of action.
The action plan will form the basis of our continuous progress program that allows the student to meet with success in every phase of the program. Because of the carefully designed nature of the program, students can work at their own pace. They can move through parts of the program that they understand easily and spend more time on the content areas that are more challenging.
Upon successful completion of each topic in the curriculum, the student will receive a certificate of achievement to acknowledge his or her accomplishments.
